  26. 2. What is !Layout?
  27.  
  28. !Layout is a PCB design program with the following features:
  29.  
  30.  - fully multitasking
  31.  - 16 Layers
  32.  - object based/hierarchical (similar to !Draw)
  33.  - PCB size of max. 2,54 m x 2,54 m
  34.  - supported Objects: Pads, Lines, Copper, Keepout, Rubberbands, Groups
  35.  - adjustable zoom, grid and cross
  36.  - toolbox
  37.  - designs can be saved in !Draw format (gives high quality printouts)

  40. 3. Use
  41.  
  42. 3.1. Getting started
  43.  
  44. Copy the application to whereever you want it. Start it by double
  45. clicking on its icon. Enjoy the wonderful picture :-).
  46. An icon appears on the icon bar. Whenever you click on it, your
  47. design window and the toolbox appear.
  48. NOTE: You can only edit ONE design at a time.
  49. Clicking menu in the design window will bring up a menu. You can
  50. edit the appearance of your design and !Layout itself with the
  51. menu and choose your actions with the toolbox.
  52. NOTE: Actions can ONLY be chosen from the toolbox

  54. 3.2. Creating Objects
  55.  
  56. An object can be created by choosing the appropriate action from the
  57. toolbox and simply clicking in the design window.
  58. Lines, Copper and Keepout objects are always created in one layer.
  59. Pad objects can be on several layers simultaneously.
  60. NOTE: ICs and texts are not implemented yet.

  62. 3.3. Manipulating Objects
  63.  
  64. Clicking on the arrow button in the toolbox puts you into
  65. select mode (like !Draw). You can now click select over an
  66. object to select it exclusively or adjust to add it to your
  67. selection. If objects overlap, double click select on it until
  68. you get the right one.
  69. Dragging on the background of the design window will create
  70. a dot-dash-box. All objects overlapping the rectangle will
  71. become selected.
  72. You can also select all objects of one type from the menu 'Select'.
  73. Your selection can be moved by dragging one of the selected
  74. objects. Manipulations like flipping, rotating, etc can be
  75. chosen from the menu 'Transform'.
  76. If you wish to change the appearance of objects (size, layer..)
  77. you must first select them. Then open the appropriate submenu from
  78. then 'Object' menu or click menu over the object's button in the toolbox.
  79. NOTE: If you select different types of objects and change the
  80. appearance of one type it will not affect the other objects. This is
  81. also true for group objects.
  82. For better handling objects can be grouped. This is done by selecting
  83. the objects and choosing 'Transform/Group'. Group objects can be grouped
  84. again as often as desired. You can use the keys crtl-g for grouping
  85. and ctrl-u for ungrouping.
  86. Copying and deleting objects is identical to !Draw, the keys ctrl-c (copy)
  87. and ctrl-x (delete) can be used instead of 'Transform/Copy' and
  88. 'Transform/Delete'

  91. 4. Saving and Loading Designs
  92.  
  93. A lot of effort has been put into loading and saving. As you might
  94. have noticed this is done as a background task and thus does
  95. not block the desktop.
  96. To load a design simply drag its icon onto the application icon or
  97. into one of its windows. You can also double click on a design.
  98. A design can be saved in !Layout or in !Draw format.
  99. It is possible to save the currently selected objects only.
  100. NOTE: Only !Layout files can de loaded.
  101. NOTE: Saving a design in !Draw format will only save the layers
  102. currently visible in the design window

  105. 5. Printing
  106.  
  107. Printing has not been implemented. If you wish to print out a design,
  108. simply save it in !Draw format and use !Draw for printing. The
  109. quality on a laser printer is excellent.

  112. 6. Settings
  113.  
  114. !Layout has a basic set of settings. These are loaded on startup.
  115. Saving a design will include the current settings into the design
  116. and restore them on loading it.
  117. You can edit:
  118.  
  119.  - 'Settings/Size' the PCB size
  120.  - 'Settings/Zoom' the zoom factor
  121.  - 'Settings/Grid' spacing if dot-grid
  122.  - 'Settings/Cross' spacing of the pointer cross
  123.  - 'Settings/Colours' the colours of all layers, background, etc
  124.  - 'Settings/Show' which layers are to be displayed
  125.  - 'Settings/Toolbox' how the toolbox behaves

  127. Choosing 'Save/Settings' saves the current settings as the application
  128. defaults.
  129. NOTE: If you click select on the up-down arrows you will change the
  130. value by one. Clicking adjust on them will change the value by ten.
